Chefs in the Garden
Chef Kathryn Bamberger and Second Grade Teacher Susan Fowler organized the second annual Delaware Community School Chefs in the Garden event with five stations featuring chefs and cooks. Forty students moved through each station practicing knife skills, using a mortar and pestle, a blender, a honeycomb and watching a wok cooking demonstration. The students enjoyed Yono Purnomo's Bakmi Goreng dish, an Indonesian specialty made with bok choy and herbs from the school's Friendship Garden. StoryHarvest blogger, chef and native of Brazil Ellie Markovitch taught how to make pesto with hers from the garden, topping fresh vegetable chips with her creations. New York Farm to School coordinator Sarah Johnson shared a favorite pickle salad recipe and Amy Ellis from the Honest Weight Food Coop made a delicious greek yogurt and raspberry dip the students devoured with fruit. Tony Antonucci showed the students fresh honey and honeycombs as well as talked about the important role bees have in growing fresh fruits and vegetables.
